Carson Web

So, what exactly does Carson Web provide?

Pretty much whatever you want using the skills at my disposal to get you and / or your business on the net, simple as that. OK, vague doesn't cover that little sound bite so here's the detail.

I use simple, clean, adaptable templates to produce sites, you're looking at one of them right now.
I use a minimum of scripts and no flash animations at all. The majority of my resources are actually free on the internet itself so all you are actually paying for is my time and effort to put together your site, that's it!

It's a bit like comparing what I do with a basic model car. It starts, stops and runs. It gets you to where you want to go with a minimum of fuss and in a good degree of comfort.
Websites that heavily rely on scripting, flash and other complicated applications are a bit like that top of the range BMW or Jaguar. It does everything the base model does, though there's many more gizmos and it's gorgeous. However, there's also more to go wrong and, more importantly, if it does it's a heck of a lot more expensive!

Anyway, there's nothing to say that if the base model does it's job adequately for you, you can always trade up in a few years all being well in business.

So, onto specifics.

1

The Website

Your website can be built using any of our templates, images of which you can access by clicking here. We currently have 11 templates with plans to expand on these within the next 4 to 6 months. Obviously we can substitute colours if you wish to blend the site with your corporate image.

There are no maximum amount of pages, however, the more pages, the more work for me and hence the greater cost to you. For this reason, sites will be built in blocks of 20 pages, each page being a maximum size similar to the one you are now viewing.

For the types of pages a typical website would need as a bare minimum, click here.

Yes I know: it's about now that the reality of cost is hitting home. If you want to skip ahead and see what you can expect to be paying then click here now.

Hosting and Domains

Hosting your site is really up to you, if you just need the site building that's no problem, I can put it on cd for you and you can upload it to your own space in your own time. If however you need me to host and upload your site, this is equally no bother.

Additionally, registering your domain name e.g. www.myaddress.co.uk can be done for you at cost.

Forum / Guestbook / Testimonials

It's always nice to get feedback and to provide good communication with those you want to see your site and / or use your services. To this end you have the option of using a forum, guestbook or testimonial page on your site. Let's take these in reverse order looking at the pros and cons.

Testimonial Page.
There are very few negative aspects to a testimonial page on your website, in fact there are only two.
First, it's static. There's nothing at all wrong in that but if you have a lot of repeat visitors there's nothing on that page to keep them coming back which leads to the other slight disadvantage, cost.
Updating pages on a regular basis will cost depending on the work involved and you can see more detail by clicking here.

However, at the end of the day, a testimonial page is just that, good feedback from your customers and those happy with your services. It's not likely to need updating very often, it gets included in the website package as 1 of your 20 pages and I will update it free 3 times in each 12 month period. So all in all, its the most cost effective option.

Guestbook.
With a guestbook you're opening your site up a little to the public. In other words you will be providing them with an interactive way to leave you feedback which can be viewed by other members of the public and potential customers. Attractive proposition?

Well, yes, but... (you knew it was coming didn't you?)
The fact that guestbooks are open to the public means they can occasionally be abused though in practice it is rare and of course they can be edited. Again though, you have a greater cost implication than the aforementioned testimonial page.
Guestbooks take longer to set up and then either you need to know how to edit messages, or if you ever need me to do it there may be a cost involved. One more thing, depending on how many people actually use it, the messages can take up quite a bit of room on the server, again this will attract costs for hosting the site.

Forums.
Forums are a fantastic way to interact with your customer base. You can reply to their online queries allowing you to explain your products and services and even gain feedback allowing you to improve the services you offer.

However, the same disadvantages exist as with a guestbook. A forum's software will take up more space on a server, it takes longer to set up and again is open to abuse, albeit rarely. Again, you need to be able to deal with any editing or I need to do it for you. All this has varying cost pressures on you. You then have the issue of moderating the forum, you should be prepared to learn (assuming you don't already know how to) administer and backup the forum.
